I made one from a reflector bracket for the inside of my chainring and the chain still falls off the other side.
I just ordered one of the gusset ones anyhow as the Bikemongerer sells them, though it pains me to spend more than £5 on anything made by gusset

It will pain you even more when the chain comes off. I've got one, with a proper single ring, and I've had the chain off a couple of times
