I had a road rear wheel totally collapse under me and I think it was because of rim wear.
At the seam, totally folded in towards the rim... Wasn't going that fast, but happened fast enough for the derailer to hit the ground and bend the hanger.
I was (and am again) well over 17.5stone with an excessive amount of luggage.
