Has anyone here ridden a wheel until the braking surface was so worn it failed? I'd like to know what happens exactly. Pressure from the tyre bead blow the braking surface apart? Is it a sudden and catastrophic failure?

There's a fair number of people who already had that happen, but I can tell you that it's a lots more common than you think.
edit - can't find the topic/thread, most recent I remember is a guy with worn out Open Pro that blew up in Oxford Street going slowly.

I've never had it happen but On Your Bike on Tooley Street had a bust old rim tacked up to their workshop wall as a warning to the lazy. It did look quite catastrophic and had apparently exploded outwards, deforming the rim.

Happened to a guy at my work. It sounded like a very loud balloon popping. I thought a power supply on one of the PCs had exploded.
Basically the rim ripped apart at the weak point. A piece of glass or stone had been wearing a groove into it - probably for some time. I can't remember if the tyre ripped/ruptured but obviously the tube was shot.

Yeah the ones I've seen have snapped the breaking surface away from the rim. The tube blows instantly. So it's kinda like a pinch flat in that you get a close to instant flat. Not what you want in any circumstances really.

I was on a trip to Italy once and one of my fellow riders had his rim fail whilst descending the Stelvio. Luckily he managed to keep the bike upright.

Used my last co2 on the way to work, anyone know a good place to buy some more 16g threaded/threadless will work. Will buy 10/20 at a time I guess. Also if anyone wants to split said bulk order let me know, the one I had lasted me 6 months.
edit - any reason to avoid the random ones on ebay?

Mine sorta looked like this. I can't remember if it was at the join though.

Not only do you get catastrophic depressurisation and the tyre bead falling off the rim, but on a rear wheel in particular you can get the semi-detached strip of razor sharp rim slashing at your calf.

Bet he needed new pants though.

I always get a big box from tyreinflators.co.uk. I generally buy them in 30s for about 20 quid I think

And if its the front then you will likely have parts or rim get caught in your front brake causing InstaEndo™

Right, best replace my front rim before I'm sorry then. Changed the tyre last night and noticed the braking surface felt quite concave indeed. All that bitching and moaning getting the tyre on only to remove it again. Fail.

InstaEndo™
To Endo, you need grip. Since you're either already running on the rim or on a tyre which has no purchase on the rim, this seems unlikely. A front end washout isn't any more pleasant than an Endo, but it tends to break a different assortment of bones :-)

Indeed - although as I found out during a recent CX race, 0psi in the front gives quite impressive grip in deep mud....
But you are correct - on the road, its more likely to wash out than send you over the bars, although neither are scenarios I would wish to encounter...

What if the liberated tyre catches in the brakes?

London question.
A cousin is planning a few day visit to London. Because he will be coming with his wife and two kids my flat cannot accommodate them. Because I live in London I have no idea about hotels and B&Bs...
He has access to the internet of course, trip advisor and etc... but any tips / reecommendations would be welcome if some of you have been in similar situation in the past... Something affordable and decent enough... -

Should be lots of city-break offers. Travellodge or similar chains are generally basic but cheap. Avoid the "independent" hotels near stations.

We've had some excellent short breaks with Premier Inn, at Westminster Bridge (Waterloo) and County Hall - not sure how it would work with kids, but fine for adults coming in by train and wanting to do tourist stuff on a budget.

if a baby is born from a left-bollock sperm, does it become creative and arty conversely does a baby born by a right bollock sperm become logical and more calculating?
