Happened to a guy at my work. It sounded like a very loud balloon popping. I thought a power supply on one of the PCs had exploded.
Basically the rim ripped apart at the weak point. A piece of glass or stone had been wearing a groove into it - probably for some time. I can't remember if the tyre ripped/ruptured but obviously the tube was shot.
Has anyone here ridden a wheel until the braking surface was so worn it failed? I'd like to know what happens exactly. Pressure from the tyre bead blow the braking surface apart? Is it a sudden and catastrophic failure?
