I'd be pretty pissed of if they had snapped in half to be honest!

Only issue I can predict is that the pomp doesn't have a cable stop on the chainstay that the stormy acher/sram 3s hubs need.
With Nexus3 you run the cable housing full length so you could just attach that to the frame with cable ties. Personally I also like the nexus better. -

Between the bell crank and needing stops the s&a sounds pretty crappy!
Another +1 for nexus
-
• #4606
My pomp (I think the v2) actually does have that cable stop for some reason. People suggested One One were using the same parts as the Kaffenback or Pompetamine for economy...
-
• #4607
I have chainstays cable guide not a stop on mine.
-
• #4608
Ahh that's right. I never even looked at mine closely. That's begging to be bodged into a stop though.

Actually the SA usually comes with full fitting kit including a 'fulcrum clip' for the chain stay:
-

It is the Nexus that has the bell crank, the SA has the good old bomb proof toggle chain, or now the new rotary shift, though I have not seen any of those versions for sale yet.

Ah sorry, yeah bell crank is shit, the s&a chain isn't much better, it also sticks out (I've got one on a charge steamer)...
As I said 3 speed is shit!
The mechanism in the nexus 7+ gears works better and looks better.

7 & 8 spd Nexus are draggy and hard to maintain: special tools needed to strip down, no spares available only a complete internal, expensive grease or oil dip, plus less reliable than the old three speeds as tend to take in water, I am on my second 8 spd one. 8 spd Alfine better. 11 spd Alfine seems to be even less reliable judging by what is reported on the net, though maybe less drag due to oil lube.
What have you got against the toggle chain? It is very robust and trouble free and is a design that has been around since 1902 on millions of bikes across the world. It does stick out slightly but what problem does that actually cause seeing as you can throw it down on the ground repeatedly without problem, as every kid in the 60s and 70s knew.

Square taper has been around for aaages but it's still a poorly designed 4 spline interface.

Funny, I have a 7 speed nexus in bits by the bed and I'm pretty sure I just used cone spanners to take it apart, fairly normal tools for a hub, no?
The 7 speed was draggy, but only because the previous owner left it in his garden for a year. The 8 speed Alfine on my genesis is if anything less draggy than the three speeds I've owned on both the charge steamer and the slightly older monach.
Meh, just personal opinion. I don't find maintainence an issue for any of them, that's why I like them (and fixed even more)... Just prefer my 8speed Alphine to the 3 speeds I've owned.

I use the Midge bars on a CX bike they're nice and wide allowing more leverge. On the road I find them too wide for any distance and therefore not comfortable.

@emyr I am not going to defend the square taper unreservedly (most bicycles of the past had cottered cranks anyway). The square taper has its issues but I would like to know what you think is better? E.g. I have found to my cost that Hollowtech 2 outboard BB bearings are short lived if you use them year round. The UN55 square taper BBs on a couple of my bikes have done 3 times the mileage taht those last and are as smooth as ever.
@Khornight2 I made an assumption that the Nexus 7 needed an expensive special tool for removing the RH cone like the N8/Alfine 8 do, thought I had read it somewhere but I was wrong. Mind you if that N7 is corroded it will not last overly long once reassembled, had this with my previous N8.
Found a chart of efficiency of hubs on the net (bottom of page): http://www.bentrideronline.com/messageboard/showthread.php?s=fcd7890c0dbe2017b7bf740484ed2ab7&t=96470&page=2 which I don't think proves much either way...
EDIT: are the 3 speed hubs you have grease lubed? If so you might have a different experience with an older oil lubed SA hub.

Looks lovely! Nice shade of blue, bit darker than the standard 'bathroom blue' that On-One sell and mudguards look at home. V nice

Quick Q, Anyone using Token Track strap pedals on a Pomp? Im stuck between getting those or some big mtb pedals with straps. Was gonna get MKS Sylvan but too fancy/wrong vibe for a commuter pompino.
-
• #4621
not on a pomp. Tried them on another bike though.
-
• #4622
I had MKS GR9 if you're looking for flats. TBH I don't think anyone's ever going to criticise your pedal choice.
-
• #4623
Yeah not worried about other people's criticism, just which pedal fits well/lasts. Really want a strap and toe clip, why I thought to go for the Token Track. GR9 is nice though, could whack on a clip from MKS too.

Here's something I'm looking to put together to handle the commute and some off-road:
