  • Getting my singlespeed MTB up and running and need advice on a couple of bits. I'm after silver cranks (175-180mm) and ring and a wheelset, but know nothing about MTBs and what's available. Looking for cheap, but decent and as light as possible.

Any real options other than WI for the cranks?

What about wheels? The frame has an EBB and vertical dropouts, currently running QR front and rear. Hope Pro hubs with spacers? Does that chew up the freehub? I see the trials/SS Hope hub, but it looks heavy and is a 6 speed that needs spacers anyway...can't see the point for my application. Thought Novatec/Joytech would have something but I find figuring out what I need from them a nightmare and then can never find a stockist.

  • Middleburn are a touch cheaper, square taper are slightly lighter than WI if I remember correctly. Have both and been faultless so far.

Shimano Deore 2x10 cranks in Silver. Remove the inner ring and replace the outer with a chainring of choice. Or just leave it as is. If you want lighter, go for XT. You'll need a HTii bottom bracket, mind.

Wheels. Plenty of options, personally I like the OTP Hope Hoops with Stans rims, but might be a bit pricey / flimsy depending on what you want to do with it. Shimano Deore / SLX / XT hubs and a nice Mavic rim? Or Novatec hubs? Fitzrovia cycles can get them in for you. As long as the SS sprocket has a nice wide base like this you won't have a problem.

  • Truvative stylo? Just put some of those on mine.

The advantage of the narrow freehub is that it builds into a dishless rear wheel, which is stronger and stiffer than a dished wheel with the same spokes. There are some Taiwanese options of similar design, but they end up not cheap enough to overcome the spares support of Hope unless you find a rebranded KT or Novatec at a really low price.

It's not really. I think part of the listed weight for that hub includes the bolts it comes with, whereas the regular pro 2 is weighed without a QR.

You could, if you want, make the SS hub a bit lighter, by swapping out those bolts for a quick release. It's not really worth it though.

  • CNC in Germany have some cheap Formula ones. I've been quite happy with mine: http://www.cnc-bike.de/index.php?cPath=25_106_755_203
