Had a Golf Mk4 for 3+ years. The only thing that went wrong mechanically is the window clamp breaking off on a frosty winter morning. Personal experience not anecdotes. Not a ford, or a GMC (Vauxhall). Ever. Would rather a skoda.

Yay bikes, right up until it's time to go round some corners.

still shows what £15k can get you and in most everyday situations the bike will get there quicker

what car should I get
Buy my Lexus. It has a special camera so you don't have to look in your mirrors when reversing. Also the seats can be made to go hot or cold.
£5k or swap for £5k worth of aerospokes.

• #21833
That bike is £65k
-
• #21834
oh yes ! didn't realise it was quite so special
-
• #21835
The P1 still nailed it.
But then £65k is more attainable than £1,000,000 (give or take £100k ...)

Sounds like the mechanism is siezed or gunged up.
Find your Haynes. You should be able to remove the lock mechanism and transplant the lock barrel into a scrapyard replacement.

Question:
I have twenty five large to invest in a future classic. It'll sit and do nothing for a decade, other than have my mother drive it to Waitrose once a fortnight (much the same as my M3).
What do I buy?
-

996
Turbo possibly. Recon the 996 is nearly at the bottom of its prices, as its not old enough to be cool (unlike the 993 is becoming) and people are still quite sniffy about them, despite the fact they look great and are very well made...
Has their been a 911 that hasn't seriously risen in value over time?... especially if you are willing/able to hold onto it for 10-20years -
• #21842
One that's probably not going to appeal and it won't dent that 25k too much ..
Ford Racing Puma only 500 hand built by Tickford

I agree with the racing puma, fun things, but if it's a 996 you fancy get an early 3.4 C2 with amber indicators and 17 inch wheels. £20k will get you the mintiest low mileage low owner car in the world and the design (and drive) is so much more delicate and pure than the big wheeled, big arsed, compromised-headlight-shaped cars that came later. They can be driven every day as easily as a Micra but when leant on they dance. Anyone who says they prefer how a 993 drives hasn't driven a narrow bodied 996.
If I had £15-20k spare it's where my money would go.

Much love for the 993 Hefty?
-
• #21847
Yeh.
The wide bodied S and Turbos look spunkalicious and they are just as reliable as the legend suggests, so I can see why people buy them, but the preceding 964 and succeeding 996 are better cars to drive.
I wouldn't pay what they cost now compared to the 996, but mainly I find them somehow totally lacking in the Hank Moody factor, they're too slick and not edgy.

• #21848
The Citroen SM, the Ferrari 400i and the Datto 240z - they would be my pick.
-
• #21849
996 just look so dull though. I wouldn't be happy with it in my garage - even for investment. I can't imagine they'll increase in value much.

The reserved simplicity is the appeal to me. It's not a precious thing to be looked at and polished, it's a 911, it's for power sliding, crossing continents and shopping.
I know people who've replaced springs on their Golfs, but anecdotal evidence is no use to anyone and springs breaking has become very common these days. Are VW using Titanium? If we want to talk suspension Ford fitted IRS to the mk1 Focus whereas VW spent their entire budget making the dash plastics in the mk4 Golf look nice. Depends what you're after I suppose
