Chain tightness issue

Posted on
  • My issue is when I put the chain on its mega mega tight. I then put a link back and it's mega slack! I replaced the full link split link with a half link but still no luck

Would a full half link chain work better?

It's a aluminium vertical frame. Just wondered if anyone could shed some light on the situation as I don't want to go down the whole route of chopping the frame for track ends

  • google magic gear

  • surely you can just change the cog and/or chainring... my gcse geometry is a bit rusty but my intuition says that it would affect the chainlength in intervals which are not equal to the 'wavelength' of the chain, which is what you want

  • ok it seems that this is exactly what magic gear is... however i would criticise the top google result: the approximation that is made for the upper and lower chain lengths have an error comparable to half a chain link, rendering the whole theory useless.

if you want to decide on cog / chainring sizes on paper, you'll have to do some non-approximate maths

  • You can use this website and enter the chainstay length. It then generates some gearing ratios that'll be more appropriate.

  • I did just have a go at calculating but it's lost me. Lol I'm rubbish with numbers.

I'm running 47 front and 17 rear. Anyone's help would be much appreciated. Any other things I can try?

Also what gearing would 47/16 be like?

  • Or use a chain tensioner (less elegant but m0ar funkt10n)

  • or an eccentric bb or rear hub

  • It depends on your chain stay legnth. If you follow the link and just type in the boxes at the top what it tells you to then it'll come up with the best ratio.

I thought I read sokewhere that you could only use chaintensioners on ss. Dunno if that's true.
And the eccentric BB and hubs cost quite a bit I thought.

  • Ghost ring?
    Are you fixed or ss?

  • Ss mate

  • Then a chain tensioner is going to be the least painful/most effective option.

  • Yeah. Though if your into the aesthetics then it may clunk up the bike.

  • I thought I read sokewhere that you could only use chaintensioners on as.

I've been struggling with this all day. "As..."?

    A.S. ?

  • Oh yeah. Sorry. Auto corrected to as from ss. Fixed now.

  • Ah yeah. You're right though.

  • Just this moment changed the rear freewheel to a 16tooth and purchased a half link chain, works spot on. Perfect tension

Just want to say thanks for everyone's help

    Cheers jsamms98
