Yes the bell crank does stick out a bit:
The new SA rotary shifter does look interesting as well as the SRAM I-3 with similar shift design, but I will be looking for a cheap second hand SA AW for my build. The trad SA toggle chain is less obtrusive than the Nexus 3 bell crank and is quite sturdy IME.
