Well I do have a single speed MTB so I think that should cover posting rights.
As for number of gears I have a Nexus 8 speed hub but don't really like it, too much drag and weight IMO, whereas a three speed is light and simple and tends to run more freely.
I am looking at three ratios as an alternative to one on hilly terrain. When I was a lad in the 1970s I had a Hercules Hustler three speed drop bar racer and that was an excellent bike that just worked without any fuss, yet performed quite nicely as well. A drop bar 3 speed Pompino would be pretty effective in a similar way I think and there is a bar end shifter for three speed Sturmey Archer hubs.
I have a 3 speed Nexus coming to me in payment for doing a couple wheel builds. Reckon it might go on my Pomp. I also think I have a buggered bar end shifter so will be trying to use a Sturmey 3 speed thumb shifter lever on the bar end mount.
