I'm a bit nervous about having them poking directly at my hand when in the middle of the cassette..should that even be a concern?
Not really. Worst that'll happen if you knock them is you change gear. I quite like using them to be honest, even on a tandem I couldn't fully control they never felt like a liability.
If all goes to plan I'll be sticking some pics of my 600 effort up at the end of the week...

@6pt @7Up sorted, thanks for the help...missing the little black plastic spacer on the right side, but it's apparently not a big deal...might just make one...
although this is now another option...
Downtube shifters are so far away for tall riders, but I'm a bit nervous about having them poking directly at my hand when in the middle of the cassette..should that even be a concern?
Other progress:
fitted most of the 600 tricolor group, had a total nightmare taking off the NDS 600 pedal, that the seller had left on (without informing me it was stuck) ended up using a cheater bar lol. Waiting for some Tiagra caliper levers to arrive and to fit the Minoura rack and we're good! Other parts on/going on pretty basic but I like them, Kalloy stem, Cult pedals, Cult x Vans grips, EA50 bars, Selle Italia Flite, Specialized Armadillo 28cs that were kicking about... excited for this one!
