Winter gloves

  • No Di2 on the road bike but I want to try them for longer cold rides when it gets dark and the heat just disappears. Not sure if warfarin is making my thin blood pissweak or if I'm just getting old and pissweak or if it's just colder than normal. Lobsters it is!

  • Were fine with old fashioned levers too. I just use the lobsters as a sort of heat top up - with defeet dura's under them.
Wear the lobsters to warm up at the start of ride, take them off when I warm up.. put back on when temp drops/descending, take off when warm again.. etc etc.

  • I find that they are great for proper riding, no problems to report at all, they take a bit if getting used to when commuting, but that doesn't sound relevant.

    They are great gloves.

  • I have Specialized Sub Zeros and some Gore lobsters. I have real bother with the Specialized as they're a 2 + 2 finger lobster and while I can brake/steer/grip and shift with the big lever fine with them, I find using the smaller Shimano lever or on my SRAM bike a complete ball ache. They're too bulky, so if I put my finger on the little lever, the glove catches on the big lever, but the bulky glove itself isn't stiff enough to be used to push the lever without my finger to back it up iyswim.

The Gore ones have separate index and middle fingers with just the two little ones lobstered and are much better.

  • I've only used my fixed gear, or Di2 bikes with them, and you can easily push the Di2 button through the fabric - tactile enough to feel which one you are pushing.

Handy thing about Di2 is it doesn't take a shove, and you don't need to move the lever through an arc - a tap/light finger pressure does the job.

  • Work fine with SRAM red and rival for me - even with the longer lever throws you need to move up the block. It is a bit easier with one paddle for everything though

  • Hah! So did I, below -3 today.

  • I like that advice, good shout.

  • In the PlanetX email today:

    Agu Tec2 Lobster Glove - £12.99

... Seemed a good deal. Have ordered a pair myself.

  • yesterday -14°c

H/H Merino liner + 5bling leather keirin gloves.
enough dexterity to use dslr, enough warmth for low tempo city riding over an hour.

    blissfull

  • I think there's a lower number Spesh, like Element 1.5 that has the split finger arrangement.
I might just buy ALL TEH GLOVES! and use them depending on temp and ride duration.

  • And you can punch off wing mirrors with abandon...

  • punching stuff with gay abandon

    main reason for buying them

  • Needs some screws drilled through the back and then every commute could play out like a Mad Max movie or Death Race.

  • Cycle Surgery have big sale on Sugoi gloves; Sub Zero gloves £45>£27 with 100g Thinsulate insulation which is used in loads of USA outdoor work gloves over regular 60g Thinsulate you get in most gloves.

  • Just got some lobsters from Phew. Customer service there is amazing; they were fine with me asking to swap sizes and even offered to pay the return postage. Gloves look good for the money, but if you're wearing them over a pair of sealskinz then get the XL.

Used my new Sealskinz handlebar mittens today. 3 degrees celsius and a little wind. They were crazy warm. Way to hot for today.
I am a size XL and I had trouble being comfortable on SRAM Rival 2010 brifters. It felt clumsy and not safe on the bars. I missed my Hylex levers a lot. Shifting was alright, but I wouldn't not use these in a race situation. Only for the wicked cold commute or winter touring. They do exactly what I thought they would do and they are quite a bit warmer than my five fingers Grip Grap and they are 100% waterproof so far.

  • anyone know of some nice waterproof-ish gloves made mainly of leather? no bulky ski gloves please. I think wool lining or removable lining is a good idea too.

  • Did quite a few hours in sub zero over a few days just before the new year. I found a good combination to be my spesh element 1.5 under and the outer of my fox anti freeze.

However after grimmly clinging on for about 4 hours in -2.5 my finger tips started to get cold, so my g/f recommended me an excellent tip; play the song on your head with an imaginary piano, tapping your finger tips on the bars. I really helped to bring the warmth back.

  • Spotter is the new scoble

  • JB is the new scoble
