Nope. Most track nuts are 15mm, there are 14 and 16 also and not all axles are the same size... 80% chance track nuts you need are the common 15mm size, but I have at least three other sizes in my parts box.
-
• #4578
Well that's kind of what I as getting at. The 16mm is news to me though.
-
• #4579
Actually the 16 mm might have been for a dynamo or hub gear...
-
• #4580
Apparently, they drop in price throughout the year. If you're willing to wait, they drop in price as year goes on IE February/March

• #4581
I thought the new pompino forks don't have caliper holes any more?
-
• #4582
I don't know...
-
• #4583
There's a hole in the fork crown, but only in the front wall.

I fancy building one of these with an old Sturmey Archer AW 3-speed hub- is that a silly idea? (Bear in mind it is hilly down here in Cornwall and my kness are 51 years old)
-
• #4585
Perfectly normal idea... But you will forfeit your right to post on LFGSS!
Except in subforum "London hub gear"...In case you think I'm serious, our venerable leader has been rocking hub gears for ages, 3 speeds are a bit crap though, either not that big a range or the gaps between gears are too big... 7 or more speed or you might as well stick to FG/SS.
Inho of course.

"London hub gear"...
...and Coaster Brake"
DO IT

• #4587
Anyone use the midge bars sold by On-One? Any good?
-
• #4588
I would start it Em, but you'll have to start a separate "northern monkies hub gears" if you want to post anyway ;-p
-
• #4589
Nah, so long as I'm an afficionado of London-style HG/CB bicycles, that's enough.
-
• #4590
If you're such an aficionado, you bloody start it.
I wouldn't bother with the CB though that is covered within FGSSHG. (Ie not unique to HG)

Well I do have a single speed MTB so I think that should cover posting rights.
As for number of gears I have a Nexus 8 speed hub but don't really like it, too much drag and weight IMO, whereas a three speed is light and simple and tends to run more freely.
I am looking at three ratios as an alternative to one on hilly terrain. When I was a lad in the 1970s I had a Hercules Hustler three speed drop bar racer and that was an excellent bike that just worked without any fuss, yet performed quite nicely as well. A drop bar 3 speed Pompino would be pretty effective in a similar way I think and there is a bar end shifter for three speed Sturmey Archer hubs.

I have a 3 speed Nexus coming to me in payment for doing a couple wheel builds. Reckon it might go on my Pomp. I also think I have a buggered bar end shifter so will be trying to use a Sturmey 3 speed thumb shifter lever on the bar end mount.

Ignore some of the funky stuff going on up front
-
• #4595
Really nice doppelkorn, is it a xl frame?
M_V when you fit the nexus on pompino please post photos. Nexus 3 is the hub with "derailleur" next to the dropout?
-
• #4596
It has a bell crank, is that what you mean?
-
• #4597
Yes the bell crank does stick out a bit:
The new SA rotary shifter does look interesting as well as the SRAM I-3 with similar shift design, but I will be looking for a cheap second hand SA AW for my build. The trad SA toggle chain is less obtrusive than the Nexus 3 bell crank and is quite sturdy IME.

• #4598
Yep, XL. Just giving it a 2-year anniversary revamp.
-
• #4599
what are those handlebars?
-
• #4600
3TTT Morpheus. I don't think they make them any more.
I think I literally bought the cheapest drop bars I could find, as this was my first drop-bar bike and I knew nothing about fit.
Same with mine, LBS also replaced with a new one free
