  • So we learnt two things from the commentary yesterday.

    The first is that Man U and LVG teams always perform better in the second half of the season. Great performance yesterday indicates that this is probably the case.

    The second is that ManU are light on solid central defenders. Having spent £150 million on attacking players, this is hardly surprising, particularly as they allowed the great Rio Ferdinand to leave in his prime. A quick look at their stats shows that this is the case.

    While they have conceded 21 goals, one more than Man City and two more than Chelsea, they have conceded 6 more than Southampton, the meanest defence in the league. When it comes to goals for, however, they are in fifth place and only just (12 goals) behind Chelsea and 11 behind Man City.

    In other words, their defence isn't so bad. Their attack is their weakness. Happily for them they are showing every sign of improving in the second half of the season and yesterday, with all their attacking players available, were able to record no shots on target.
