You shouldn't need full tension on the road. It seems a bit odd. There are sites out there with DIY strap advice, although some pedals work better than others. I bought my current pedal setup on here and they came with a strap loop bolted to the bottom of the pedal. A nearer solution than zip ties, but zip ties are just as effective.
