Looks good. What size wheels does it take.

Takes 26". 28s can fit but nothing more than 700x25 tyres in the front fork.
Any recommendations for the wheelset? Not much out there, if any, in 26". I will need to lace ones myself. I've been thinking about front XT m756 hub for the rear wheel and bolt a cog on the disc mount.

Would like to see how this develops, I like the old GTs and have a Panterra in the garage, although to small a sixpence for me.
Why can't you mounts v brakes on those bosses?
Why are you struggling with 26" wheels? There are billions out there, and he hubs should be standard mtb oln.

The front fork will take v-brake, but the rear has different bosses. They are thicker and placed above the braking surface on the rim. Check the first photo.
But, I just came to an idea that could work. Road brakes with long reach. Something like Dia Compe 806. They have 75mm reach and that should be enough. I would have to place the rear caliper on the inside because of the bosses. I did some measuring and it should work fine and still look good. In this case, no struggling as i would just get regular 26" wheels and install the single speed kit on the rear hub. Fixed gear option would require building wheels on my own. -

The frame came with a front canti centerpull and a rear u-brake. I guess this was one of GTs first mtb frames...

maybe look into 650b?

the bikes takes 26" wheels. Stick with that. I suggest RibMo for the tires.
As for the brakes, they're lovingly called "990's" (aka the u-brake) and shouldn't preclude you from building whatever type of bike you want. you just need the correct brakes. they're readily available for not much money.

there are millions of 26" wheels ranging from free to close to 2000 bucks. i'm confused why you say "not much out there"
-

if you want fixed you can use it ISO brake mount on any 26" wheel designed for disc and mount this type of thing. Maybe a bit esoteric.

@bright I've never considered anything other than 26". The plan from the start was single or fixed. What I meant with "not much out there" is that I haven't seen 26" fixed/track rear wheelset ready to buy (apart from disc wheels). 28" you can find anywhere.
Disc wheel and velosolo cogs have been my primary choice because i can get the right chainline. and yes to RibMo!! -

Few more bits on..Have pretty much everything, just waiting for the wheels.

looks like fun, i had similar looking palomar - solid.
did you powder coat the brke bosses? ooof if so. may struggle.
i like the internal tt cabling, you should put a chunky black* acs u-brake or similar imo.
as for rear whels, yes not loads of 135flipophubs like few years back but there are ss cassette hubs. nice noisy ones.. -

Inspiring build. Would like to see it as a single speed complete with DMR chain tensioner and big fluoro Magura brakes on it though!

This looks great! Always kinda wanted to make something like this.
Have a rough plan on my head to get an old mtb frame and weld track dropouts into it.
Looking forward to how this turns out.

Thanks guys!
@adrevporn the paint is car lacquer, nice and thin, done by a pro, so no problem with brake bosses.
I'm going fixed with front v brake. I have a pair of Avid Single Digit 7. Should be ok. Rear wheel will be mavic rim with XT 756 hub and I will use disc cogs. It will give me the perfect chainline with the crankset and BB that I already have. I will just change the axle for a longer and solid one and use track nuts instead of QR.
Due to chainstays and clearances, there is no other option than to go with hubs that give 50+ mm chainline. Especially with bigger chainrings. I have a 45t one. -

Silver/black combo looks very smart, interested in how slack the angles are on that early GT MTBs.

rad. always thought about doing this sort of convert.

Just a question. Would a 700c wheel fit as I'm sure the clearances with the seattube would allow for it but what about the bridge?

I have literally no idea. But it would be in the whole package of me learning to weld and would do it myself.
My dad can weld and owns a car resto place so a lot of the guys that work there are incredible welders. Always wanted to learn...How much do they charge out of interest?
I got this GT all terra tequesta frameset a few months back.
Paint was in bad shape and I decided to strip it to check if there was rust and give it a new paintjob.
It's a steel frameset made of triple butted Tange tubes. Built like a tank.
Dropouts perfect for SS or fixed project
So, the initial idea was SS or fixed. However, i wasn't paying attention to rear brake bosses and just later realized that I cannot mount v-brakes on.
I wanted to go SS with v-brakes for cleaner look but that's not an option anymore. The other option is fixed, or the least preferd coaster brake fun (but might not be able to achieve the adequate chainline due to chainstay clearences).
Feel free to share some ideas!
