I found upgrading the front caliper to the newer dual pivot was a lot better.
The single speed wheel was a big improvement. The 5 speed gears never really worked that smoothly and I found the ratios weird. 1 very very easy gear, 2 The one I used all the time, 3 4 5 angry commuter gears. It made a big difference on the weight which was the main reason I did it.

How did you find the move to single speed? I also have a very old 5 speed (not to mention your old rear wheel, thank you very much)
For my part, I always dread having to ditch my big bike and ride the Brompton and then utterly love riding it. I should upgrade the brakes though, they are dreadful on mine.
