As a whole lots of people seem to think "Ow, but this just wants you to be a good person"...because that's all they know/get told. Church and critical thinking don't mix. Blind faith and all that.

But this religion is nice, love for all, surely it could work? Well...no. The nasties always take over, and hack the religion for itself. And there's always some convenient text to justify it.
I just meant to say that even if the theory is nice (and you are right, often it's NOT) it will go to pot anyway. People often seem to justify religion by "ow but these people are nice" or "that text is nice". Yes...but... :)
Christopher Hitchens would disagree. The theory of being overseen for the whole of your life by a judgemental god who is indifferent to your earthly suffering and then cast into hell or raised up to heaven in order to to praise him for all eternity isn't really "nice".
