Sram S300 chainring bolts issue

Posted on
  • So I took delivery of a brand new Sram S300 single speed chainset and I intend to swap out the chainring that comes with it but I can't for the life of me get the stock chainring off. Apparently Sram uses loctite to secure the bolts. The nut turns with the bolt if I use just an allen key, and the dedicated tools I have to hold the nut in place (Park Tool CNW-2 and Shimano TL-FC22) don't fit the interface on the back of the nut.
I see people swap out chainrings on omniums all the time, do they use the same chainring bolts as the S300? Anyone else had the same problem with S300 chainset (or omniums for that matter, if the have the same issue)?

  • Common problem. Omnoms and pretty much every other SRAM crank I've seen use an allen interface on both 'nut' and 'bolt'.

  • Someone here is reporting a problem that I can't work out is similar or identical...

  • I think someone on 'ere had the exact same problem, might have been posted in AQA though, so difficult to find. I think the resolution was to source the tool that actually held the nut, then replace with better bolts, or just drill them out.

  • Thanks for thinking with me guys. The back of the nut has slots like they normally do, it just doesn't fit the tools' interfaces (the tools did fit every other chainring nut I've used them on btw).
I tried inserting different sizes of allen keys from the back into the nut but there doesn't appear to be a hex interface in the nut.

  • Time to kill them in the face with a drill methinks.

  • Seems like the funnest option
