Black is a shade ;-)

Finally getting the ball rolling on this after much deliberation. Taking Brian to a frame builder next week to get a rear hanger and cable guides. I've not had much luck finding a small steel roadie and with another two track bikes laying around I can justify putting gears on Brian..
So, with the intention of racing on it, what groupset and wheelset would people recommend? Leaning toward campy because aesthetics and some sort of carbon wheelset.. Is that a crime?

campy

Hah, I am not putting Shimano on it.. so ugly!

SRAM Apex for cheap, function and looks. All in black.
Here's a similar bike - this has Force on it i think, but at one stage it had apex and it looked great and rode really well.
(not my image or bike)

Also, don't bother with crabonz. for wheels look for Novatec hubs and possibly Kinlin rims (xr200 or 270 maybe) Even just novatech hubs built to black open pros would work well and look the part. If you want wide and aero FLO30's or 3T Accellero Pro 40's

I has Sram rival chainset, derailleurs, shifters for sale. Also mavic open pros 32h on ambrosio zenith hubs, if your interested?

SRAM is a possibility, though I've never ridden it before and it isn't hugely popular at the bike shop I work at. But I'll keep it in mind, thanks. Also I believe that bike used to be @Dom or @JB at some point?
I was thinking if I don't get carbon it would be open pro or TB14 laced to something (don't know what road hubs are good, bit of a newbie). What box section wheelset offerings are there, without having to build my own?

Thanks, but I'm not in the UK!

I think you can still order Hope hub/open pro wheel builds from a few places.
You're in Perth right? Maybe look out for DT swiss rims (rr440 i think) laced to dt hubs as factory builds - pricey but nice. May be cheaper in Aus?? There's loads of options, check out the wheel thread. Given the clearances of your frame, I'm not sure modern wide rims with 25c tyres would be ideal - worth checking they'll fit.
There's nothing wrong with SRAM - just needs a longer rear derailleur cable and housing than usual for smooth shifting and you need precise tension for the FD to work properly - inline adjusters needed. It's totally personal preference though. Apex or Rival or 5800 105 won't hamper your performance. I personally like SRAM for the hood shape and I know how to set it up.

ah didn't think of that, I know Open Pros work with 25s as I've been running them for a while now. Doesn't leave room for much else, though! I'd be tempted to get black TB14s, though not if the braking surface is going to get rubbed off straight away. Looks shite. It is tempting to get a set of Reynolds or Zipps when I can get them at wholesale ;-)
SRAM shifters look very comfortable, much nicer than Shimano and Campy too. And I do know that SRAM Apex brake caliper works with my fork, might not be the case for other groupsets due to the short drop. I'm using 105 on a borrowed road bike at the moment and find the shifters are too big for my hands. Can't get enough power when braking, even with them adjusted.

SRAM brakes are very good. I'm pretty sure the drop is the same for Apex/Rival/Force.
As for the hoods, you can adjust sram levers too, I find them totally fine for leverage and power. I don't have huge hands either, usually a size small glove! Go see if you can test ride a sram equipped bike. If you can afford it, Rival or force is good.
Double tap shifting is great and should take no time to get used to. Yes, the FD's can be less than perfect but I believe this is mostly fixed now, and if you get a compact 50/34 you'll barely need the inner ring anyway.
Can you get trade prices for zipp 202?

Might have impulse bought 165mm carbon Athena mid compact chain set.. I was worried it was last of the 2014 stock so jumped on it. New campy cranks look gash. Will probably splurge on Chorus for the other bits.
Wheelset will probably end up being Zipp 202s or 404s if I can get them through work otherwise I'm not sure, suggestions?
Had to disassemble Brian today because I'm moving in a couple days so put my road bike wheelset on for shits and giggles. Spacing is 130mm still, even after years of riding fixed #steelisreal etc
Excuse the clutter, small room, too many bieks!
