and that would work on my 9 speed Shimano cassette. Ideally get a Campag rear mech?

Don't think 11speed shifters and 9speed cassette will work...
although this: http://www.ctc.org.uk/cyclists-library/components/transmission-gears/derailleur-gears/shimergo suggests it might - if you use a shimano rear mech..

Yup - as above it can be done.
11speed is simplest as the spacing for Shimano and Campag is the same on the cassette.
The derailleur pull is different though - I would suggest using Campag levers AND rear mech (Shimano front mech + Shimano chainset should work fine)
