Ladies do Dunwich?

  • Ok, so the last time I did the Dynamo was in 2010, I'm thinking about doing it this year, to give myself something to train for. This year it's 4-5th July.
For those who don't know about the Dynamo - it's about 120 miles, overnight, unsupported, to the seaside.
Any of you lot fancy riding with me?

  • Good thinking.

    If I can, I will.

The route technically gets a wee bit shorter every year, unless you get lost of course :)

  • I did it for the first time this summer, somewhat on a whim (I'd been meaning/wanting to do it for years and usually the timing clashed with something but this time I just forgot until a few days before), and was surprised just how much I didn't die and actually properly enjoyed myself. So partly I really want to do it again, and partly I don't want to do it again and find it not so good... but y'know it doesn't do to be too precious about these things so YES, diary-dependent am up for it.

  • I've wanted to do this for a couple of years. Guess I need to start looking at lights!

  • definitely - haven't done it for a few years, v up for doing it with a friendly group. will probably give it a go fixed.

  • yep

  • Awesome! I will be doing it geared, but am not very fast and its a lot more fun if you stick with a bunch of people. The first year I did it, there was a bunch of us, we got horribly lost - rode with the legend that was 50/14 (he wore jeans and had no lights) and had a hilarious time. The second time, was just two of us, we didn't get lost and were vageuly quick. The first year was way more fun.

@Two_Omegas First year I did it I used a Hope One light, I still have it and will prob use it again - it's the cheapest bright light out there - would recommend.

@Miss_Mouse when will the coach tickets be out?

  • I would be up for doing the route but not the same weekend as the dynamo. #antisocial

  • how antisocial do you want? you could set off late when it's much quieter.

  • Probably more antisocial than that...

  • Might do it again this year if it's dry and I'm not in France. Don't bring your Sunday best bike if it's going in the truck for the return journey.

  • @Miss_Mouse when will the coach tickets be out?

I'm no longer involved but usually it's around Easter. I can update this thread once I know.

Or if you do, bring something (blanket, dust sheet) to wrap around it. Bikes are tightly packed together in the trucks and spokes, pedals, bars etc. can get a bit jammed during the journey back to London.

  • @hats has an interesting point, I like the ride but I hate the lack of sleep/waiting for coaches/long uncomfortable ride back home.
Is it worth considering doing it, the weekend before/after and during the day? This would mean

    Good things:
    no sleep deprivation
we can ride to Darsham and get the train back
Things would be open so we could stop and get food if/ when needed,
Option to bail for any injuries/bedwetters

    Not so good things:
Traffic - mainly round East London and Epping, it'd prob be a bit shit.

  • I'd be up for doing as a night ride on another date but no so fussed about doing it as a day ride.

  • I'd be keener if there weren't loads of people too!

  • Wot KT said.

  • Also Dunwich weekend clashes with the Grand Depart 2015 at Miffy's House in Utrecht which I will deffo be attending!

  • Ooh I love Utrecht, I can recommend an awesome apartment to stay in right in the middle of town if you need accommodation - that was way cheaper than the hotels and was run by an awesome man with cats and a handlebar moustache, and a very cool back street restaurant

Anyway so it's looking like maybe 27th June (week before Dynamo) Night ride to the coast?
This could work, however we'd need to have a few garmins - each others numbers, and stick together.
Whenever I've ridden Dunwich in the past I've always lost the people I started with (mainly cos I'm slow) but this isn't an issue as you just follow the crowd. Since we won't have a crowd to follow - we'll need to all stay at the same pace, which I'm much more keen on anyway as it'll be way more fun. So slowest/tiredest person at the front, and if one needs to stop - we all stop.

  • I would love this little private ride. I can ride at good pace but no garmin. I have a number and the ability to stick together.
    Marked saved in mah diareh.
    I'M IN

oh---- does this mean that we can finally make our own roundels !?

  • I haz garmin (got new shiny one for xmas from the boy) with internetz tracking business.
Ok I'm gonna create an event, in the spirit of the DD it will be turn up and ride, so I'm not going to hold it against you if you bail. Also, if the weather is completely atrocious it ain't happening, but a little rain isn't going to put me off.

    roundels? like

  • Woo hoo!!!! Date in the diary and am (rather too) happy and willing to go buy a Garmin, purely to aid a smooth group ride you understand :-).

    I haz waterproofs also.
