• Hah! SRM Germany took over a month to answer my email, then simply stopped replying.

I had to use SRM in Colorado to get the work done, as they replied to messages.

SRM Germany are a total waste of time in a customer service situation.

  • Personally dealing with anything that involves a trip to a post office or courier fills me with a sense of creeping dread. I'd be tempted to get Stages from an LBS so that you can at least dump it on them when it comes to send the thing back.

  • I think my new Powertap G3 is fuxxored. I'm hoping a battery change will sort it out but none of my older style hubs ever reported too high values unless they were toast (usually full of water, just before dying completely). It was reporting too low maybe a week or two ago. Stupid thing is sat on the turbo so it's not like it's even had a hard life.

And I'd still buy another one over Stages.

  • Based on my experience if you are out of warranty then Saris will exchange your G3 for a new one for £349.

Not cheap, but you get a brand new hub, with warranty etc. They rebuilt my wheel for free, also.

  • Bought quickly off ebay when my old wheel failed, but it was supposed to be 'new'.

I'm waiting to hear from them about the old wheel - I'd like to have it upgraded to G3 but if they're as bad as my first one, maybe not!

  • ^ in same boat with my old one. Just stopped working. Calibrates at 355 or something. Not sure I can be fucked to fork out £350 when thats basically what I paid for it in the first place.

  • Tempted to just flog it for parts on ebay.

  • I've been happy with mine - it's very well suited to my needs (swaps between track/ road/ winter bikes easily, with zero maintenance). I had an issue with a crack in the sensor case, Saddleback were excellent and I had a replacement unit within a week of posting the faulty one, with no questions asked. I would recommend buying in the UK for that reason (though I'm sure Germany would be ok.). In terms of measuring power they have their limitations, but as I've said ad nauseam here it suits my particular needs and budget right now.

It's worth colouring this review with the fact that I paid trade price for mine - just over £400. If I could afford a dedicated track powertap or SRM then I probably would go with P2m for road - but we're talking about me suddenly spending another £1-2,000 here - which is unlikely.

I'm kind of of the opinion that in 5 years time powermeters will be a hell of a lot more reliable and affordable, more like a groupset item than a specialist tool (though companies like SRM will always offer a superior professional product) - so until then you're looking at an interim solution based on your needs and budget.

  • Friends don't let friends buy Stages.

  • Have you considered sending it back? Do you know for sure it will cost that much to repair?

  • I want a PT disc version for my mountain bikes now... :)

  • The rotors are bloody pricey

  • Who said we were all mates? ;)

  • That's really helpful, thanks Dan. Will ponder for a while. I just want something easy to instal and set up to be honest. I'm not bothered if it's a few % out, as long as it's consistent and gives me proper numbers to track against.

Will keep pondering. I certainly want to keep this to a sub £1k investment, which is another thing pointing me to stages.

  • Might be worth waiting for 4iiii's offering. Been out for a few weeks now I think, I assume reports will come flooding in over the next few months.

  • With that budget you can get a P2M and some change.

  • Anyone think P2m will drop their prices any time soon?

  • Why would they?

@jim1985 I would buy P2m if you can afford it.

  • The rotors are bloody pricey

Not necessarily. I got a spare one, new, off eBay for 26 quid.

  • Also the alloy-ring looks to me like it could be re-used, with a bit of cunning disc adjustment.

  • P2M every time.

Unless you want to swap between track and road. In which case it's stages v vector. I've seen some well priced single side vectors. No idea how well they perform though.

  • Well, yeah, but the list price is bonkers

  • Power meter in a pedal... for racing. No thanks. Especially not a really shit pedal.

  • How long are your track cranks +dan ? Wish I could do that trick but the road cranks I have are 172.5 and track 165. If the problem with stages doesn't get resolved, I'll sell it and buy P2M.

  • Yeah. Does seem a poor choice with stages available. The pedals are fine. But may not be to everyone's taste I guess.
