Thanks. I actually have some 'cross' tyre already, I'm trying to find something that will meet my needs of feeling nice on pavement but allowing off road adventures down Yorkshire's fine bridleways. The trouble with lots of the 'commuter' tyres seems to be that they weigh a metric tonne. I'm not looking for a weenie build, but I do want to keep the bike feeling relatively sprightly (or as sprightly as possible with big tyres).
Gravel kings or the Clements seem to fit the bill, but Clements are $$$$$.
Still, #treatyourself, right?
You could just get a pair of Landcruisers for a tenner each. They're the go-to tyre for tight northerners racing the three peaks.
