Hello! Is this bike still available ? Looking to buy for my 10yr-old son ... he is 140cm tall - think this makes him about 4 foot 6", so a bit short of 5 foot 1" ... standover height about 67cm ?!

Hi
Should be fine my son was using it from about age of 10. -

Right, just had a look and turns that from the floor to the top of the frame we are seeing 70cm.
Not sure how you measure standover though but that's what I'm seeing on the tape. -

Good to know bike is still available. Thanks also for doing measurement. Olly is I suppose on the small side for a 10yr old - OK torso, but short than average legs ...
We sat him on a Hoy 650c Meadowbank this afternoon in our local Evans bike store £380 in sale (hence tardy response) which he was exact right size for, with seat at it's very lowest ... but view the investment I think we need to give some serious thought as to how long a 650c bike would realistically last him versus how big the stretch would be for him to a 700c bike ... annoyingly they did not have a small frame-sized 700c road bike at Evans (apparently Hoy bikes use same frame for road and track bikes).
I have contacted Dolan Bikes today re: sizing and have also asked coaches at Welwyn for some advice ... so once I have a steer from them I will be back in touch asap either way ;-) -

thanks for letting us know.
from our experience smaller bikes fit better but as you already said for a very short period of time.
best to try 700 and see if he can ride on it safely and if yes just go for it.
we went through 650 wheeled bikes and frankly they last short time and you never get your money back.
Road bike wise Isla bikes seems best investment as they sell for not much less then what you paid and are great to ride. We had Penarolla (I think - not to mistake with Pinarello) - great little bike with full Campa on but as said you pay loads and get little back after like in our case literally 1 year.good luck with it! loads of money to spend ;-) but great fun

Our experience at Meadowbank and Glasgow is that "position is everything" for a youngster on a track bike as a poor position will sap the meager power they have and make the whole experience uncomfortable and more prone to spills.
We run kids in our club [http://www.theracers.org/] on 650C wheel bikes till they get to a saddle top to BB size of 64cm or so then move them on to a 700c bike of 48 to 50cm top tube size. A local club may well do a similar loan scheme as purchasing them at retail can mean a big loss.
I would be wary of a very small frame with 700c wheels as the geometry will be a real compromise between handling and dimensions.
You can always sell on a 650C track frame and use the parts on the next frame size up.

That's most professional response and what we were focusing on as well. Sometimes difficult to do as kit for young ones doesn't come cheap though. Main thing is - He needs to enjoy it and be comfortable and confident and parents able to afford it.

ebay now - closing the thread
right,
before sticking this on eb@y I was thinking one of you might be interested.
This was built for my son he is about 5'1 (about 156cm) and fits him well and will fit someone either side of that as well. Bike done maybe 100 miles as however loving riding his bike he never got on with track ... oh well.
Right as you can see that went well over £300
Wheels which are presently on the bike are Pro-Lite Rosa (tubular) with Giro Conti tubes on - they were at the time I believe £250-300 - however I rather keep them
Wheels I want to sell that bike with are V-Sprints on this thread
I was hoping to fetch £300 for the lot - bike and V-Sprint wheels but willing to discuss options / offers.
Bike to be collected from Twyford (just before REading) easy access from Paddington (between 25 and 50 min depending train you take).
