Rather embarrassingly, your answer also indirectly answered my un-asked question of "how the hell did I damage the splines of my freehub so quickly?". Answer - I installed a 10 speed cassette on it without a sodding spacer! Don't know how the hell I missed that when I fitted it. Expensive lesson learned.
