Can I build a recumbent?

Posted on
  • So, I have an entirely mad question for the frame builders out there...
Despite having had no intention of ever riding one, I've suddenly had the urge to try building a recumbent... (Yes, I'm probably mad.)
The big question here is can I build one myself from scratch? I know someone who's got a scrap frame I could pilfer for the rear triangle, and I was thinking it wouldn't be too huge a job to weld up a recumbent frame. Structurally, it's way simpler than a traditional diamond frame in terms of angles, alignment, and construction.
    I have three questions:
Firstly, can I actually build my own recumbent relatively easily?
Secondly, does anyone know the easiest way to access a welder?
Finally, fixed-gear recumbents, are they a thing? Are they even possible?

  • I don't think you'd be able to do whipskidz on a fixie recumbent.

  • Interesting project.

People have built recumbent out of broken carbon fibre masts.

  • It's just a crazy idea at the moment...
I don't plan to do whip skids! I just think it would be a little fun to have it set up as fixed... if it ever gets built...

  • search google for atomic zombie, thats all diy recumbents etc.

and get an old but not shit MMA welder. they would do the job, are easy to use and not expensive or needing gas - so easy to live with

  • Mike Burrow's always ends up devoting a chapter or two to recumbents whenever he writes a book. If you fuck the rear end alignment up in relation to the front, you can just say you are a subscriber to the "Burrow's school of offset wheel positioning".

Mike Burrow's once told me all the bikes I had ever built were pointless and shit. One of the proudest days of my life. CSB

Anyway, no idea what you are capable of, only you know your technical proficiency. I'd say just fuck some shit up and bite off more than you can chew.

On a completely unrelated note, that's why I have a massive hole in the roof and an irate wife.

  • How many wheels?
If 2, how low do you want to go?
If 3, 2 at the front (Tadpole) or 2 at the rear (Delta)?
