  • "felt like a broken variable gears bicycle" - never heard anyone say this before. What make was your brakeless hipster bicycle?

I rode this Dapper in 2011 summer and after 2 months became annoyed by coaster hub because I had to always adjust pedal position for take off after stopping at traffic lights.

  • I switch back and forth between geared bicycle and fixed wheel bicycle, riding it as a singlespeed felt a little lacklustre in comparison to riding it as fixed.

I have the same bike, very relaxing to ride, find the coaster to be perfectly fine since I always revert to leaving the pedals at 2 o'clock every time I coast.

  • Vintage suspension?

  • Vintage suspension.

  • Did it come with a carbon post? Also it's hong fu (66sl), right?

  • Any problems with the federales at customs?

  • Hong Fu actually amended the invoice, so the parts were marked as samples to get through customs. Even with that I still got charged £20.

  • Silver or black headset on my Rych?

  • Got a bit of money from my ageing grandparents this Christmas (500 knicker), and rather than have it absorbed by my overdraft I'd quite like to spend a bit on a frame and bits. I'd quite like to downsize my bikes and get a do-it-all type thing. I thought this was going to be a crosscheck, but I didn't get on with it when I had one and I'd quite like something a bit posher.

Is there a better do-it-all-but-not-a-tank than an Equilbrium? I'd quite like to try discs, just because, but I think that might be over budget because I have enough stuff to build a rim brake build and it may not be something I can stretch to.

So, 2 questions: alternatives to Equilbirum disc frameset (I've seen some clearance 725 ones for £370ish, but second hand would be massively preferable) and the cheapest way of doing a (mechanical) disc brake setup. Hubs, rotors and calipers that will work with 6600 levers.

This is my current garage. I'm moving in the new year though and it's unlikely that I'll have the same amount of space, hence the downsize...

  • Have you seen the 650b conversion by @amey - do it all.

  • Chinese carbon?

There's a Kinesis trips tear frame on eBay in what looks like your size

  • The 650b idea had struck me... Are discs necessary for that? I'd like a bike for fast, long rides with a bit of luggage as well as general commuting. My argos is too stiff for that sort of thing, but I'd like to keep it for crit training and summer blinging. Track is definitely staying, as is the don brooks. The rest will find its way to new owners at some point...

  • Ah, thanks for the heads up. It does seem to fit the bill, except it's not very sexy, is it? Shame it's not black, that colour way really seems to work.

  • It'd be so rad if Genesis sold the frame sets in yellow : (

  • I've got exactly the same idea and bike in mind! Had a go on it and it rides so damn well! Proper eggs you on without being a bully.

  • I've got the Equilibrium Disc and would definitely recommend it as an all-rounder. If it's all kitted out to be a commuter/tourer though it's a bit of a pig - probably 11-12kg - and you do notice the difference on hills etc.

But it's a brilliant commuter, and was nice to tour with as well

  • Ach, I need to go and try one really. Just trying to work out what I actually want from a bike right now. It's a horrible thing having money burning a hole in your pocket #extremelyfirstworldproblems

  • ^^^^ jeez that's one hell of an ugly bike
