Mine are more powerful and with more rim clearance than the best (non-hydro) caliper brakes I've tried. If you don't need the clearance (road use) you can run the pads close to the rims and they're very powerful.
They're still fairly useless in situations you'd usually choose a mtb.
Setting them up is relatively fiddly, but I didn't find it difficult.
