  • Excel creates Venn diagrams in Smart Art, where you size the circles by eye - not driven by any data.

  • Hi,

There is a much easier way of doing this, which would also be more intuitive to the human brain, if you want to convey relative amounts in a Venn style format.

Being more intuitive to interpret reflects in it being more intuitive to achieve, without the need for non-linear maths.

How? Use overlapping squares or rectangles.

If all 3 values are to be different, use 2 rectangles of the same height, but different width, overlapped by the amount required.

Visual programming is my bread and butter :-) If you want a simple doodab to do that automatically, where you can enter 3 values (left amount, overlap amount, right amount) , let me know and I will knit you one.

    +1 for Mondrian

Can do with circles too, but as you approach narrow crescents, the brain becomes less able to appreciate the relative area compared to the central portion, so the method becomes less advisable.

The horizontal rectangles below are the quickest to understand.

The rotated squares are a step easier than overlapping circles to appreciate, but are still not ideal, because the left and right sectors, being L's are not the same shape as the central sector.

  • When i manage to log in, I've a macro that can generate the circles based on data inputs.
