Didn't it have to do with keeping the mudguard from folding / creasing too soon and looking beaten in no time? At least, that's what I heard concerning the >09's.
Recently got these on sale for the misses. Lunar's not my cuppa, but doesn't look too bad in a small size + toe box is decent.
