  • Nice, I'm clearly not the Mac Guru I was 15-20 years ago... Cheers, dude...

  • I need to instal 10.10 on my main machine, looks so much better....

  • My mac skills 20 years ago consisted of playing Grag and Thog Bonkheads on my mum's powerbook.

Oh crap, I've just found it for the iPhone. Goodbye afternoon, I hardly knew ye.

  • Those were the years I'd religiously buy MacUser, MacFormat, MacWorld, /insert any Mac magazine here/ and read them cover to cover... Over and over and over again...

Glad I got out of that particular behavioural loop... ;)

  • Running Time Machine on two drives simultaneously is very easy, two minutes and all set up... Moved my home folder over like @mattioats said and that seems to have worked fine too (after a little tweaking here and there)...

Feels like a new system... Now all that's left is for the Yosemite trim wotsit to bite me in the arse and fuck everything up...

  • If Yosemite is very worthy of all this effort i'm sure it will go for a better arse…

  • Do you just use the middle button on predictive iPhone text?

  • I don't iPhone, me in other world. Can I have the alternative question?

  • I needed a new computer (always used laptops since my first iBook in 2002) and once I got an iPad I started considering a desktop...
Yesterday I walked in the Apple store and tried both of them (standard 27" and retina 27"), as said before, current standards don't require a 5k screen, but knowing how Apple mafia works I simply thought it was better splashing £250 more and get the top they can offer atm.
Years ago I made the mistake to get an older macbook pro to save few euros and what I got at the end was a machine that I had to replace before.
I had your same impression when I confronted the 2 models in store, but after working for a day in photoshop now I would never go back to standard.

  • I've manage to acquire a discarded iPhone 5s with a broken screen. This is now fixed (by a shop) but after resetting, I get either the red screen of death or recovery mode. I took it back to the (massive prick in the ) shop who tutted at me and said I was doing it wrong. I mentioned that I'm quite capable of resetting a phone and I don't think that's the problem.
He fixed it and told me he just reset it. Having got it home, it froze on the logo and went red screen again when I tried to reset.
What the hell is he doing that I'm not?!
I've tried 2 computers and 2 cables, 1 an Apple cable.
    Cheers all.

  • I'm looking to buy a second hand 13" Macbook pro. There are alot on Gumtree. It seems to be about £500 for a 2011 /2012 model with 4gb ram. Any opinions on whether this is worth the money? For a 2013 / 2014 they go up to around £650 but I'm hoping not to spend that much. Any advice appreciated. Thanks
    William

  • Try CEX shops, the computers are cleaned and tested. And, if I remember correctly, they give you a period of warranty.

  • What do you need it for? A second hand 13inch Pro is a bit of a dinosaur IMO... you'd do better off with an Air (with it's SSD) in most cases.
For £500 you should be able to get an i5 and an SSD, which will be a lot faster day to day than a C2D MBP.

You can prob do better, but quick search... http://www.gumtree.com/p/macs/macbook-air-13-i5-mid-2013-251ssd-hard-drive-4gb-ram-1.4-hz-very-good-conditions-microsoft-office/1092793484

  • My priorities are:

    1. spending as little time as possible looking for the new computer and setting it up, hence getting something that is easily available and similar to my current machine.
    2. Value for money / reliability
    3. I make and store alot of film / audio using the inbuilt camera, and imovie, which may be quite basic but I'm used to it and it suits my needs.
    4. streaming video off iplayer etc, browsing.

I dont want an air because I like having the dvd drive.
    Thanks Marcom I'll try CEX.

  • Still really happy with the SSD upgrade, totally recommended to those folks who haven't already done so... Very easy to DIY as well, I'm normally super cack-handed at these things but managed it with very little problem... 12/10

  • My early '08 MacBook Pro seems to have given up the ghost (think it might be the logic board). So it might be time to get a new one. I don't have a spare £1000, so was wondering if leasing might be a good idea - has anyone done this and if so, any recommendations?

  • Defo go for that option over leasing... I think I will be doing that for my next purchase...

  • Just in case it's salvageable - any recommendations for a Mac repair shop in town?

  • What makes you think its the logic board?
In my experience its the drives that are the first to die but are luckily the cheapest and easiest to fix...

  • The screen goes all psychedelic (rainbow edges to everything) and starts flashing and although the pointer still moves you can't click on anything or force-quit etc.

So it sounds like a goosed graphics chip, so the logic board would need replacing. It's nearly 7 years old, so I think it's had a good run, time to sell it for parts perhaps...

Need to decide if I can live with a 13" screen and if an Air or Pro is best. I use PS and ID a lot, so I'm guessing I'd need the Pro?

  • It will almost certainly completely die soon. Get a new one. My 08 MBP went at the beginning of this year with similar shenanigans an the lead up. that and ridiculous fan speeds, high temps, no battery and then one day zip. nothing but a tiny white light blinking on the front.

I am constantly amazed and astounded at the speed of my new one.

  • The price between an entry level pro and a decent specs air is marginal. I went for an air at the beginnung of this year and swiftly cancelled it and order and gone for a pro in the end. Going down from a 15inch screen to a 13 retina really didn't bother me when on the go. When I get hone, I plug in into a 24 inch screen. Happy days.

  • Nice one thank you, looks like the Pro for me then.

Thankfully I managed to clone the hard drive, so nothing to stop me getting a new toy!
