  • you dont understand beaters

  • Rear brakes usually tend to be a little longer than front, always had been.

What pressure are they under? the tyres will stretch over time and will be closer to 42mm.

Look like you can easily get away with some massive mudguard too.

Is there a benefit to the surly one?

Surly will work, my main concern is that it's a little on the long side, hence the other suggestion.

  • Yes, @amey's bike was designed with a slightly longer reach (brakes), so your Langster should be easy enough to convert into 650b.

Schwalbe make 38mm Marathon Plus, 35mm Kojak, and 38mm Durano E in 650b too.

  • Big tyres FTW though.

  • South London 650b 4lyfe.

  • I think they're about 40psi; already feel so fun; cant wait to ride! I'v already got 45mm bluemels. I'll get both hangers for now and return the one that doesent work the best; most likely ordering everything from SJS once I call them in the morning to check if they have all of it in stock.

  • lush!

do you know what's the front rack and chain keeper?

  • Yeah what Ed said; your frame is more suited than mine; read this: http://www.rivbike.com/kb_results.asp?ID=64

Most common range among, say, '80s and '90s steel road bikes with sidepulls is mid-350s. This means it uses a "short-reach" sidepull with 700c wheels, and is a good candidate for conversion to 650B with the slick Silver sidepulls.

  • Custom i'd think. its a bishop

  • 45mm will most likely be a tight fit, but should be okay, you might be better off with something closer to 26" 55mm.

  • I think they're about 40psi.

Pump them up to about 70psi and leave it to stretch it.

  • I blew one inner tube doing that; user error I guess :P
    Using these atm: http://www.wiggle.co.uk/geax-mtb-inner-tube/

  • I had the same problem on my last project, and resorted to use AICAN Aluminum C Brake Shoes on my long reach tektros. They're pads housings with a 10-15mm offset. They're probably not the best solution but I haven't had any issues and I'm sure you could get similar pads housing cheaper... At least cheaper than a pair of new brakes.

  • Sound like a good idea, get the bike rolling until the IRD arrived which would look better with matching dual pivot.

  • These?

Sounds like a great idea. Do you have any pics of the set up?

Bdop's offering is $30 + shipping ! They do specify that the reach is extended by 7mm though ..

  • Exactly those indeed! I didn't want to link to the Bay. I'll get picture when I can...

Edit: You can see them in action there

I use them both ways: shortening reach on the front and lengthening at the back

  • For whoever it was who asked for a photo of my genesis with the thorn forks.

  • And do you notice a difference between the forks in terms of handling? Interested in this whole trail issue.

  • Looks good. I assume the rack's mounted on the fork eyelets now rather than the axle? Have you noticed this introducing any flex in the rack?

I just made some adapters to fit mine to the eyelets of a Disc Trucker fork and there's a noticeable flex/sway to the rack even with light loads and has made the whole bike quite sketchy to ride... Unsure if it's the eyelet mounting or the adapters just aren't up to the job despite being of similar dimensions to the originals.

  • Definitely, more responsive and much more comfortable.

  • Cheers. That was me. Got them anyway.

  • Thank you sir

Have ordered them from that link this morning and already got dispatched email; if I can get the bike on road this weekend it'll be awesome.

Installed FD, RD and shifters this morning .. I love the 5800 improvement esp the hood shape and clamping bolt placement.

  • How do you mean comfortable? Like less road buzz going into your wrists?

Also I'm sure you did a CP thread but what cranks are those?

Mine seems slightly stiffer, possibly. It's hard to say as the only time I noticed it previously was when i had a rack bag and panniers and then it was more a backwards and forwards movement from the support that runs to the crown. My girlfriend just got one of these and they now come with a much heavier gauge support, so If she lets me, i'll swap mine out as i guess it'll be stiffer.

Oh also, I didn't need any adaptors to fit it to the fork eyelets, just flipped the axle mounts upside down.

Yes, less buzz, but it also handles lumps and bumps much better, I always had the feeling that the straight ones transmitted the shock straight up my arms.

The groupset is silver SRAM Rival, with a x5 rear mech to handle the large range
