Rear brakes usually tend to be a little longer than front, always had been.
What pressure are they under? the tyres will stretch over time and will be closer to 42mm.
Look like you can easily get away with some massive mudguard too.
Is there a benefit to the surly one?
Surly will work, my main concern is that it's a little on the long side, hence the other suggestion.
Actually just fitted tyre on the front wheel and the front brake is absolutely fine; think I'll keep it that way and get the Dia compe for rear with the hanger @edscoble suggested above (already have swisstop pads and compressionless cables)

Grand Bois Hetre on VO Diagonale rims measure about 36.5mm for now; reckon I could get even thicker tyres in there but I'll stop for now ..
Initial mock up/current state:
As soon as I get the rear brake sorted I will complete the build; its getting silver 5800 gearset (11-32) with matching silver hubs and when it wont need locking it'll have Rotor P2M cranks otherwise the ones in picture.
