I could do with some reading-based 'bright times'. Does anyone have a recommendation for enjoyable, humorous reads? Anything on the dark to light spectrum, but ideally relatively new/contemporary.

^ HHhH maybe, dark story but really well written. It's funnier than this blurb I nicked makes out though
The novel follows the history of the operation and the life of its protagonists – Heydrich and his assassins Jozef Gabčík and Jan Kubiš. But it is also interlaced with the author's account of the process of researching and writing the book, his commentary about other literary and media treatments of the subject, and reflections about the extent to which the behavior of real people may of necessity be fictionalised in a historical novel.
terrible title though

@macready @bitterbuffalo thanks both - I'd never have looked at either of those, so will give both a try. Cheers.

Whoever suggested the quantum thief (Jean le Flambeur series), I thank you. I've read quite some sci-fi and this is some nice work. Exciting, easy to read but some very cool and well laid out ideas.

@Smolders it appears Hannu Rajaniemi has three more stand alone novel on the way, but by the sound of it not too soon

Post #5 set the precedent and since it's what I'm reading it's more on-topic than most threads here.

There is arguably some artistic value in Matt Seaton's work.

I've just started reading this again, after reading it when it first came out - I can easily see myself picking it up every few years for another re-read.
I had started to read The Fractal Prince, but felt that I would enjoy it more if I got a little bit immersed in the story universe first.

I finally finished reading 1Q84 by Murakami. I'm not sure how I feel about it yet. It didn't wow me as much as I expected.

My reading for 2o14 (from May to December)
Doesn't seem a lot, when looked at like this.
Aiming to get through at least 50 books this year.

I just logged in to Goodreads to see what mine looked like, and fuck me. I only read 10 books in the whole of last year.
I think I need to spend less time fannying about on the internet.

pretty pleased with my xmas haul, although i own the Mark Beaumont already. Would exchange for Douglas Fairbairn - Shoot, or John Williams - Stoner. Or anything else good I suppose.

Found a well leaved copy of the Beaumont last year, interesting if a bit dire.

Beaumont was rather disappointing, I thought it would be another 'Mood of Future Joys'
Different premise to the two round the world trips of course, but I found Alastair Humphreys' journey to be much more satisfying

Anyway, if someone wants it i'll do an exchange
