Seized Cartridge BB Cups

Posted on
  • Being the type to try and do it myself (and Googling forums for solutions and more or less universally coming across everyone just saying ''go to a bike shop'') what are the best ways/is there a best way to remove bottom bracket cups absolutely welded into the frame? I buy the occasional bike as a project and every single frame, without fail, new or old, has a BB that just will not come out. Help, please?

  • I think you'd need horrendous luck for every project you undertake to have a truly seized bb.

In otherwords, you either need to htfu or work on your technique.

A cartridge bb is best removed by holding the tool in a vice and using the frame to apply the leverage.

Sheldon has good techniques for removing older style cup n cone BBs.

  • A trick is to pour a few kettles of hot water to help expand the metal a little.

For the cartridge BB try one of these, or if you are doing this regularly https://www.machinemart.co.uk/shop/product/details/clarke-cew1000-electric-impact-wrench?da=1&TC=SRC-impact

  • If you don't have access to a bench vice...try Vince.

  • You're telling me. Honestly, greasing a BB doesn't seem to be a thing in the Midlands

  • Thanks Howard, that's a great post.

  • @vince for credit :)

  • Success, combined Vince's method of building a totem pole of nuts onto a screw to press the tool on, with putting the tool into my vice, for frame leverage. Man that was satisfying!
