I need to buy some canti brakes on a budget. For a winter commuter/tourer thing. What would people reccomend for less than £30 (ideally closer to £20). Also, is there anything to look out for? I've never had a bike with cantis before.

Road or MTB levers?
Shimano CX-50 are great.

XLC makes a really nice and very cheap canti brake, called the BR-C01. The design is almost identical to that of vintage Shimano XT cantilever brakes. http://www.xlc-parts.com/produkte_detail_en,1220,1441,detail.html
The Tektro RX-5 mini V brake is also cheap and probably a lot easier to set up than your typical cantilever brake. The down side is it would look nearly as nice.

Don't post much so apologies if this is completely the wrong place. I've been making a disk wheel with expanding foam but need some help getting a smooth finish, cheers!

Maybe sharp knife and sandpaper?

I didn't realise you needed different brakes for road or mtb levers. My plan was mtb levers for now and probably road levers in the future, is that possible?

and if you google homemade disc wheel it will show you the processes of making one indepthly -

Yep. For the road levers you need slightly more pull, but they make specific levers for that purpose. They're quite cheap too.

Thank you, i've already tried the filler but didn't seem to actually be that good at.. filling, must be doing it wrong!

Cantis are a bit more fiddly than v brakes, and good brake pads are dearer. Unless its a canti frame (vs would look fugly on my thorn) or you need big mudguard clearances, I'd go for v brakes.
Cantis work Vs are just easier :)

I've got a set of cantis on the way for mega cheap. Until at least spring the bike they're going on will be a ropey fixed gear conversion for winter commuting so it's not as important how well they work and will give me the chance to see how I get on with cantis.

If you're a tall fella, might be worth investing in those fork mounted cable hanger.
-
• #98522
I'm pretty short, 5'8" ish. What's the advantage of using a cable hanger? Sorry for all of the questions, I really have no idea what I'm doing with cantis!
-
• #98523
you will need a cable hanger to route the cable through to make it work, this article is good guide to set up and adjustment which can be frustrating http://www.sheldonbrown.com/canti-trad.html

Cheers for the link, that'll stop me from posting in here another 20 tomes!

Fork mounted one reduced the fork judder under braking, usually a problem with carbon fork/long headtube.
You replaced a Cannondale Track with a Leader? Probably a good decision, but excellent trolling here using one of the forum's sacred but ugly cows.
