• Still pretty new to the forums, so thought I'd introduce myself a little more, and keep a record of what will be my first fixed gear bike "by design", rather than something I've assembled from random crap I found lying around so I could get out and skid around and have fun.

Unfortunately, I am a sucker for Cinelli bikes. Can't explain why, and I know they are overpriced etc, but I wanted one. Fortunately for me, when Planet X started selling them for cheapz, I managed to get onboard and grab one before they went, so I didn't have to pay through the nose for it. I also bloody love the colourway on it.

At present, I have only got the frameset - I'm going to have some wheels built to my own spec for this one, and the other fixed gear is an old steely, so practically none of the parts fit. That means playing the waiting game while I source and save for the parts, but I reckon it will be worth it once I finally ride it for the first time

    Current proposed spec

    Frame and hardware
    Cinelli Vigorosa 56cm F+F
    Deda RHM01 compact drops
Deda/cinelli stem - unknown which one just yet
    Cinelli/Thomson seatpost
    SRAM Omnium cranks - 48t
    ATAC pedals
Cinelli Bartape - dunno which one yet
    Fizik Aliante saddle
    KMC chain

    Wheels
    H+Son Grey Ano TB14 rims
    BLB Track hubs
    Spokes on wheel builders' recomendation
EAI 19t and Dura Ace 15t cogs
    Gatorskins

  • Awesome man - thanks for the heads up!

  • Don't get Gatorskins either. Horrible, rigid, and grip less.

  • I've found them to be grippy enough myself (not a high end performance tyre by any stretch but the durability is pretty appealing). Interested to know what other tyres would you suggest instead?

  • GP4000S is my favourite all-rounder: roll great (especially with latex tubes), good grip, puncture resistant and pretty durable.

  • Always wanted one of these in that colour scheme.. Can't justify atm..!

  • Update!

A mate was selling these for a reasonable price, so early Christmas present to myself. Bit of light scuffing but otherwise in good knick

  • And the photo didn't upload! Trying again now...

  • Yeah I'm also a big fan, use them on my road bike but for fixed gear there will be some skidding from time to time, and I'm not willing to burn 40 quid that often - might consider something high end for the front though.

  • Something a bit lighter and faster rolling on the front is a good shout. I'm quite impressed with conti 4 seasons, they are grippy and confidence inspiring in shitty conditions. If the clearance on the Vig is anything like my Parallax then you can fit a gurt big Hardshell in the rear for mega skid resistance.

  • I've had excellent experience with the Conti 4S. Barely a puncture in the 3 years I've used them (on the front).

  • Quick update. The wheel spec has changed a little. Hope to have them built up early Feb assuming I've got the doh so plenty of time to revise it again. Will post up photos when ive got them. Any personal experience that is relevant or can help would be appreciated as always

-hubs being changed to SE bikes slayer hubs in black (what other colour) as I can get hold of a pair for cheaps. Can't find much info about these hubs anywhere, but holding them in my hands, they are well finished and machined, the cartridge bearings are super super light running, female axles, lighter in weight and unlike the formula/BLB/whatever the bearings are seated behind a cover which from an aesthetic point of view I much prefer
-Moving from 32 spokes to 36 F+R - this is unfortunately the only pair I can get my hands on without substantial cost and hassle. Seemed a bit overkill at first, but any small extra weight offset by lighter hubs, and a stronger more durable wheel to boot. Spokes will be black
-sticking with archtypes, but will move to black 'uns for all black 'erythang

  • Omnomnomnomnom

  • Subscribing, have built from scratch on this frameset too.

I would personally go with silver spokes. Have/had grey Archetypes on BLB king hubs on mine. The grey is very dark, matches the tyres better.

  • I have changed my mind ultimately! Still sticking with black rims, but going for silver sapim race spokes - aesthetic choice but also a financial one! I've ordered the wheels so will post some pictures once they are done.

  • Today was exciting. First because I ordered the remaining bits of finishing kit for delivery in the coming week so by next weekend the bike should be assembled and ready to ride! I should also thank @BareNecessities for the stem he sent me, though haven't taken a pic of that yet.

Second, because I went to pick up my new hoops for it after @Borek built them today. He has done a bloody fine job too - really even tension and straight as a frickin' arrow. As I mentioned before, the hubs are pretty damn impressive. I'll hold off on the final judgement until I've had a chance to ride them around for a bit, but they spin as freely as any dura ace/other high end hubs I've had my grubby mits on. Also got my 19t EAI cog in the post so I slapped that on too with the lockring to follow. So the final build is:

    Black H+Son Archetype rims, 36H
S.E. Slayer hubs, black, 36H front and rear, double fixed on the rear
    Sapim silver race spokes
    Gatorskin 28c on the back
GP4000 25c on the front (got it for free from a mate and promptly bought him a beer!)

I've popped some photos in so people can have a look. Gone with bigger tyres to help soak up the crappy roads in SW England, and for a little bit of longevity as well. Was going to have a hardshell in the back (ooh err), but the shop only had a regular gator in either 25c or 28c, so went for this one. Both fit the Vigorelli without any trouble at all.

  • Cheers for the update.

Going to be building mine back up in a month and good to hear that 28c tyres fit!

  • No worries. I reckon there might even be enough space for a larger tyre than that.... But don't hold me to it!

  • This Saturday?

  • I reckon so mate - waiting to hear from Rob to make sure. Many excitement. So anticipation.

  • Oh my god! That's the Edges music! The Edge is here!

  • Waiting to see how those wheels look on your frame!
As you know, I went for the grey hoops with small flange hubs and black spokes&nipples.
