Radial front wheel

  • Hey all,

So I live in a hilly area and I'm heavy = alarming rim wear. I'm thinking of my next front wheel being a radial spoked one so I can replace the rims pretty easily and quickly.

    Any reason not too?

  • i really don't see that radial rim is going to be that much quicker to swap over than a traditional 3 cross.

you say you are heavy, in which case a stronger wheel build makes more sense

have you considered getting a bike with disc brakes?

  • cross laced is not "stronger" than radial. Radial is fine for 20H or 24H wheel. 28H wheel especially with small flanges have spoke holes close together so why take the small risk of flange failure. crossed lacing is best for higher spoke count.

  • "Alarming rim wear" + a resolve to use rim brakes = invest in something like a Rigida CSS coated rim.

    If you ask me.

  • I'd never heard if them before, thanks.

  • Keep investigating brake pads, for certain rims pads can be a real issue. My commuter bike the rim is a mavic MA40 and it seems to chunk off into the brake pads every few days = no braking + huge gouges dug into the surface of the rim.
Changed to a different pad (was shimano XT canti pads) and problem solved.
