Cheers guys any estimates as to max tyre size is it likely to be more than 23?
-
• #203
OK, I use Zaffiro Pro clincher made by Vittoria with a 622 x 23 size (the white ones, other colours available ) for long distance rides on my Compact. That's no problem as long as you keep an Eye on the gap between the Seatpost And the Wheel. This Must be larger than 20 mm. Otherwise you gonna rub off the painting from your seatpost due to deformation of the wheelset. Havent tried bigger yet, but for the upcoming retrorides I just build up an older frame which can easyli handle 25-27mm, so I can mount Kevlar supported clincher aso. That's more comfy for stages of Paris-Roubaix or L'Eroica...

I was realy tempted to do so Colin!
Instead I told him to keep an eye on it, rebuild it and I sended some pics to Marco Gios for the Evaluation, maybe it's even a real "Ijsboerke " bike... Besides, it was too small for me, framesize 57 -

New to this forum but I do know a really good frame finisher who matched his Gios Blue to a well kept original frame. The refinishers are TOC Ltd in Coventry, they have a face book page 'tocycle'.
Here is mine after rebuild in local Race Bike Shop. -

There's a Gios Super Record with a coin fork for sale on Marktplaats here in the Netherlands:
If anyone's interested I can help with buying / shipping it.

Colin is totaly right! Nowadays two GIOS companys are existing. One is the international brand, selling anywhere "designed in Italy" massproduction frames from Taiwan. In Italy is the original Gios manufactory, family Business and handmade frames with the real Heritage. BUT, to buy anything from it, you have to go there (And be able to afford it ;)
I don't understand. My Compact Pro says "made in Italy" on it. I didn't go to Italy yo buy it... I highly doubt the seller did either.

The hint is in 'nowadays', the Gios Compact was made by Gios, in Italy. I suspect that small but significant parts of Gios_Compact were made there as well. I believe it was as close as Gios got to making a mass-market frame and a lot of them were exported. The choice now is; get a Gios, made by the eponymous Marco in Italy for more money than I shall ever possess, or buy something from a gentleman in the Far East who bought some naming rights.

Finaly I found this original Gios Compact Tool for the adjustable rear dropouts. I had it once, 25 years ago, when I bought this frame but it got lost. Then I saw it on the bay and remembered it ... I had to buy it.

After almost a year I have finished my build up projekt of a Super Record frame from 1979. I found it on the bay for cheap but in a very bad condition. It took a long time to collect all the parts needed even though I had the original pantho parts on stock. The frame got an acid-bath, then I brought it to a our famous frame builder, to get it fixed. He cleaned the lugs from Sharp edges, closed holes which were drilled in to fix a number plate to the frame. Then I sended the frame to Marco and Aldo Gios for a new paint, decals, coins and front shield. A Friend from this thread picked it up in Italy and brought it back to me in a fantastic new state and look. Thanks again Gerard! After month of searching, polishing, rechroming aso it is done now and ready to roll for the upcoming retrorides, just enjoy:

Any idea of where I can get new dropouts for my Gios Compact?
-
• #218
Sometimes Compact-Frames in a very bad state are offered on the bay or other marketplaces. They are a good solution to get the very rare spare Parts: Dropouts, Fork and the rubber Hoods for the brakecable.
Otherwise you must visit Gios in Italy and buy them there, the rubber grommits are 30,-€ the pair, the dropouts I dont know.
Maybe the "other" Gios Company offers these ends too and you can order them at a local bikeshop which is distribution partner of them... -

That looks like a fine project. Can you share a picture of the damaged dropout?
-
• #221
Unfortunately I can't because the frameset has already been sent to craftmen. The dropout was welded but when replaced the framset will be saved. I did the same with my colnago super. Some sellers get rid of such frames cheaply.

Gios Super Record chrome forks with coins on Ebay for £69 starting bid if anyone is interested, look pretty good.

I was wondering if anyone had any thoughts/insight on this frame being NOS or repainted? The stickers are on top of the paint, also no tubing stickers and the paint on the bottom bracket is thick (so thick you can only just feel the 58 size marking under the paint) http://www.classicbikeshop.eu/GiosNW-details.html thanks for any help

Definite repaint, looks suspiciously like powdercoat. In all honesty a frame of that age is unlikely to have original unmarked paint. Mine was stripped back to bare metal (see build thread elsewhere) and every detail looks sharper than on this one. My original Gios paint was pretty damned good, not glooped on, but you need to be an old git like me to remember that...
-

Colin is totaly right! To get a Second opinion send the pictures to Gios in Italy. Do not sandblast the Frame to get the powdercoating off. Give him an acidbath. To my opinion it is a Last Generation Frame of the SR with a welded mount for the Front derrailleur And golden Coins.
Hello Colin and thanks for this compliment. Dear Citron, this bike looks quite authentic to me, a late '90s Version probably alike the "Kelme" Teambikes. I'm not so into this decade, because they are not regular confirmed for retrorides. That's why these bikes are a bit cheaper at auctions, but still unique pieces. To get a very good approval please make some Screenshots or send the Link to Marco Gios ( info@giostorino.it) he will certainly give you an answer regarding this frame. Good luck, good ride
