  • Booyah!

  • Was about to install this ^ so moved all my movies over to the external drive to free up space so I can Time Machine everything onto the SSD...

Hard drive info (Apple - i) tells me I have 362GB used but About this Mac tells me there's 664GB used and that 312GB are backups! Backups?!? All my Time Machine backups should be on the external drive... BTW it's a 750GB internal drive...

    Wutz rong?

  • HAve you considered using Carbon copier? Could be a simpler way?

  • Yeah, you're probably right... Will look it up...

  • I think thats what I used, probably foolishly as I ended up with OSX also installed on an external drive (didn't try and boot) but it'll be great for your situation... oh they have gone and made it a paid app.. http://bombich.com

  • Still need to figure out why one part of the system says there's more free space on it than the other... My Opticaddy just showed up as well, almost ready to roll...

  • The system will include all it's virtual memory and it's own recovery files - so realistically you have a lot more space free. I can't remember the solution, if there is one though. Helpful huh?

If you can, just manually copy your needed files onto the external drive. then do the full clean install on the SSD. Or use carbon copy cloner. Or buy a TB external drive.

It'll be worth it though, SSD make mac good. Careful with the screws for the HDD into the opti caddy, the threads of mine were not quite drilled correctly and I had to modify them to get the screws to thread

  • I've watched a few YouTube videos, looks pretty straightforward... I just wanna make sure I can clone my system across properly... I normally just dive straight in and fuck something up... Might leave it til the weekend... Bought another external drive today as well, gonna try and fashion some kind of RAID backup type thing too...

  • @amey - re: your usb problem - have you tried resetting the SMC? I'd imagine you have, but thought I would suggest as it's solved a similar problem in the past.

On another note - does anyone know how easy it is to use Chromecast with a MacbookAir and/or iPad?

  • Cloning my hard drive onto the SSD while at work wasn't such a great idea, don't think it's gonna be finished copying before I leave... #firstworldproblems

Bought a cheap(ish) enclosure at Maplins this morning, seemed the easiest and cheapest way to do things... A SATA - USB adapter was £30...

  • Whenever I do anything like that I set aside a day or two to do it. Always takes loads longer than you think it will.

  • Also @amey how difficult was it to replace the HD on the iMac? I think my studio one either needs a new one, or to be sold + replaced....and I'm loathe to give Apple any more of my money.

  • Not too challenging if you have any technical know-how and 30 minutes spare.

  • Yeah, I'll probably have to start again when I get home... Oh well...

At least I'm on the way to getting it done, it had better be an improvement after all this!

  • SSD is in, nice and easy and seems to be working well...

I then attempted to erase the drive I'd just replaced, it asked for the HD password went on its merry way and then there was an error of some kind... Now the system won't give me the option to erase, everything's greyed out when I open Disk Utility... This even happens in recovery mode... It seems that the system is defaulting to the old HD as the system HD even tho' the SSD is now the internal drive e.g. it still gives me the option to erase the SSD... Any ideas on how to get it wiped clean?

  • Feels way faster, thanks for all the tips... Now I just need to get my files over onto the old HD, hopefully that'll make it even quicker...

  • Just got one of these new retina iMac, pretty funny how 99% of the internet looks designed 15 years ago.
    Fusiondrive is quiiiick.

  • Which one did you get? I'm defo buying one. Are you going to bootcamp it?

  • I had a look at those in the store the other week. I didnt really see the benefit of retina myself, at least on a huge screen.

    Still jel tho

  • All sorted... Yosemite has some new file structure so I had to erase the drive on my gf's Lion equipped machine... Bit of a bitch getting some of those screws in when I was putting the HDD caddy in, I need bifocals...

Feels great, really quick, only takes about 15 secs to boot... Well happy, thanks all... :)

  • Next question... What's the easiest way to set my old drive up as the default location for all my stuff? i.e. music, movies, work stuff etc

Wanna leave the SSD free for applications and system stuff...

  • PS I haven't installed Trim Enabler and everything seems absolutely fine, will my MBP now blow up?

  • Won't that copy everything over including applications?

  • Nope. The home folder is in a separate branch of the structure. In this pic, my home folder would move from that folder, leaving only guest and shared, but Applications, System etc. will stay where they are.
