Balls. I saw some of these somewhere the other day and they were <£5 each. I remember thinking that when they first appeared they stupidly expensive. But now for the life of me I can't remember where I saw them.

I've used them with ATAC, flats/cages and BMX flats - no problem. :)
Got another wall of them now!

^ this was my understanding of how they worked too

I got some wood from a neighbor that was getting rid of his heavily built wardrobe. I decided to build my own shed/wardrobe for bikes and parts.
Looks pretty basic but is seriously sturdy and very versatile with all the shelves and hooks. I am now after some cycling themed wallpaper to make it more pleasing on the eyes as bare wood is fairly ugly.
Girlfriend doesn't complain anymore, so the main purpose is already achieved.

Good stuff, now you only need to put another one in on the other side of the chimney breast, and then another, and another ... :)

£25, including 2 drill bits.
I was bored of working, and we've sold the lock-up, so the massive mess needed tidying.
Somewhat takes up the entire basement though.

don't know if anyone has any experience is this area. I just bought an asguard high security bike shed for my back garden, will my bikes be ok in it? will they get rusty or anything?

Any cheapish solution for a stand/rack that I can have in my uni accommodation? I have 1 bike in the shed/garage and keep my two nice bikes in my room. Would ideally like to have them on a stand to reduce room, i can't drill walls so it needs to have some sort of support.

@eyebrows, searched for this thread for information and this is exactly what I had in mind for our new garage. Any more info? What hooks are you using, just something like this or something more bike specific/sturdy? Also, are the rear wheels of the bikes on the floor or are they hanging suspended? I'd guess between my GF and me, that the difference in wheelbase would mean at least some/most would need to be hanging.

Yep, ladder hooks, wrapped in inner tubes/ cloth tape.
Otherwise its a piece of softwood carcassing, attached into the shitty old bricks with masonry screws and plugs (to spread the load), and then just the ladder hooks into that.
Get your ladder hooks, make sure the carcassing is longer than them, and make sure your masonry screw are at least 2x the width of the carcassing.
The wheels are on the ground, but one of my bikes has the shortest wheelbase- by a long way too- compared to my gfs two- so you may be surprised.
In theory, it shouldn't matter if they're hanging as the system puts the weight down through the carcassing, rather than away from the wall- and to make sure you can add a few bracket sections. -

anyone had any issues with the basic halford bike hooks? Mine are sagging a bit with the weight of the bikes. In a standard hardwood wall. I was thinking of getting some flat m8 spaces as a potential solution?

Thanks, I may give it a go.
How stable do you think they are in terms of side to side knocks? At the moment, the door into our garage is in a very similar position to the open cupboard in your pic. The door will eventually be moved, but for at least the next couple of months there will be a (small) risk of people/dogs bumping them as they rush through.
Also, is it easy enough to get the bikes into and out of the hooks? I mean my GF struggles a bit when trying to lift her heavier town bike onto the car rack... I guess if the rear wheel is on the ground then you just stand it on end and wheel it into place with no lifting required.
