Anyone tried a Planet X Pro Carbon Track frame?

Posted on
  • Planet X have a clearance deal and I'm tempted to upgrade my track bike from the current Dolan Pre Cursa.
Does anyone have any experience with this frame?

I'm accredited at LVVC but not exactly an experienced track rider.
I read that this frame was a bit 'twitchy'...

    All opinions gratefully received
    Cheers
    M

  • I had one: never thought of it as twitchy. Handling will depend on how you have it set up. I never had anything shorter than a 120mm stem on mine so it was pretty solid steering-wise, but I only ever raced it at HHV - it will handle a bit differently on steeper banking.

The only downside I found was the frame wasn't that stiff around the bb / stays - but that's only compared to my DF3 and plenty more talented riders than me win lots of sprint stuff on them.

Overall they are great frames - definitely an upgrade from the Giant Omnium i had before and they are incredible value for money when you consider that any other carbon frame will cost 2 or 3 times what the PX does.

  • I did the upgrade and love the classic aggressive track geometry - 135mm stem.

  • @dan @Thuekr thanks both for the insights

Interesting Dan you found the frame not so stiff; I thought stiffness was it's big selling point.

£199 at PX for the frame only - am slowly convincing myself...

  • I'm speaking relatively - its nowhere near as stiff as my DF3.. But then that's about as good as track frames get - and cost a great deal more at RRP.

  • Yeah. I take your point.
I reckon £199 is a good deal. Frame only. Do you think?

  • yes

  • @dan Thanks again

  • no worries

  • Oh crap - did I let the cat out of the bag ? - looks like PX have pulled that deal.
Although.... might be an admin error - the 'Outlet' now shows the frame at £499 (was £199)

Full price F/F is is £549....

Anyone from PX on here like to comment ?

  • Their pricing is often a bit misleading - the 'FROM £199' price is often taken from some obscure size/version/ colour (650c, xsmall, guru colour.. or whatever).

What size are you? There are normally a few frames floating about second hand here and on the TT forum. I sold my medium in great condition for about £230 including Fork, headset, post and seatpost clamp.

  • No, they only had five size small, guru blue left as clearance frames at £199.
They've still got five but now £499...

I'm guessing small is my size - I'm 5' 9" with short (fat, hairy) legs. And I generally like to ride a smaller frame.
I've been keeping an eye on the forums here.... but let me know if you know of anything going.

  • This seems to happen a lot.
Advertise at one price but no option to buy at that price when you click on it.
    Some dodgy Google rankings thing?

  • But weirdly - the listing page for frames at outlet prices says it's £199; click-through and the product detail page shows £499

  • It is just that, to gain google rankings and generate noise AFAIK.

A lot of online retailers are guilty of it, sometimes without even knowingly doing it.

  • Classic planet x pricing bullshit
