pre-'O'-level History in the early '70s,
everything seemed to hinge upon John of Gaunt.
It was only recently,
(maybe related to Medieval Total War),
that I finally found out he was born in Flanders

so should be called John Of Ghent,
which, again, doesn't seem to be mentioned in the above article,
apart from the claims of his illegitimacy.
