Worst case is that it won't fit well, let water / dirt into the roller bearings, and boom your fork is as good as destroyed.
It kinda needs to be pretty much identical to the 'dale original - too big and it will go on OK but it won't seal the internals, too small and you won't get it on without complete dismantling of the fork - which is a horrible job requiring specialist tooling.
^Yeah cut something down and buy some yellow zip ties. Could be quite a neat bodge, worse case.
