What's the 50/50 rule?
-
• #2856
No more than 50% of points could come from Perm/DIY events.
So if you did 80 points in perms/DIYs but only 70 points in calendar events then you would only have 140 points in the points championship rather than 150.
At some point there was a theory that someone may cheat their way to the points championship by riding perms/DIYs but cheating on them by using trains/cars/etc. The idea was that it would be much harder to cheat if they had to do a reasonable number of calendar rides (where they'd be seen by other riders).

10.1 Points awarded: Members shall gain points at a rate of 1 point for every 100km ridden in BR and in BRM ridden, in the UK or overseas, the PBP and Fleche Velocio. These points shall count for trophies awarded by AUK with the exception that for individual points trophies listed under Guideline 5, the number of points gained by a member from Permanent events must not exceed the number of points gained in Calendar events.

Cheating
Audax
WTF

• #2859
I've seen/heard rumours about it.
Someone deciding to pack and so they get the train. 2 or 3 stops later they think "actually, I want to finish it" and get off the train and (rather than go back to where they got the train) wibble on to the next control/finish.
DIY by GPS opens up all sorts of possibilities of armchair Audaxing.
It's sad that people would cheat, but it's worse when you have a sledgehammer of a rule to crack a very small nut.

That rule is most sensible: to get some beers after 500km in a group where one man then will be strong enough to remember the route to the last control.

Repost? Going to pop the kettle on and sit down and watch this shortly...
This is cycling at its most extreme an event that isn't a race but where entrants battle both the clock and their own pride. Welcome to the very specialist world of Audax, where just completing the route equals success. The Highlands, Glens and Western Isles ride is the toughest ever to be staged in the UK.
Adventure Show cameras followed nearly 30 exceptional cyclists day and night as they attempted to cover 1,300 kilometres in just four and a half days. For many that meant abandoning food, sleep and normal life. Having to be entirely self reliant resulted in an Audax at its most exciting and cruel!http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b04v5hhh/the-adventure-show-20142015-episode-5

Ah my mate mentioned that. Was only on BBC Scotland, IIRC?

@andy_k Thank you.

It's definitely happened. There was something in Arrivée a while back (I think they have to report this stuff, it's like councils and planned roadworks) about some chap who basically made up all his rides: they threw him out of AUK.
Pretty weird.

Ah, this will be the show that Willesden riders were in. I couldn't find it on the tv box. Thanks for the link.

Really well filmed. They captured one of best bike rides I have ever done.
They were very sympathetic to our way of doing things and captured the spirit of long distance riding very well.
The scenery would have been amazing in 5 days of rain, but to experience it in weather like that was just incredible.
The event will run again in July 2016 with, from what I understand, a few tweaks to timing and route to take some lessons from this year's event. It won't be for everyone, but for anyone that enjoys testing their self-sufficiency to the absolute limit, it was an incredible few days awheel.

Just watched it. Excellent. Makes me want to do more Audax idiocy (apart from the usual two short ones).

It's in my to do list (watching the video, I'm yet to see the ride details..)

Before digging through the back-issues of Arrivee, has anyone ridden and can recommend any events/perms in or around the Lake District/Cumbria (or those to avoid...)?

The Pendle 600km, or pretty much anything organised by Andy Corless...

I've just watched the Adventure show; what a nice piece of TV! As mentioned above, a sympathetic and interested look at a marvellous ride.
Marcus, what were you carrying on the front of your bike? You seemed to find a bed each night, but the front kit on your bike looked like sleeping kit / drybag type stuff.
I saw this on another forum...made me laugh.
