Hmm, thanks for this Dammit - I genuinely have no idea about the costs of ownership in the UK - I will research.
I was thinking £1500-2000 being a realistic TCO. So maybe doable.
I don't spend nearly that on rental, although last year I spent around 350 on zipcar including annual fee and about 500 on normal rentals.
But having a car ready to go is quite appealing.
