the grooves provide extra grip plus you won't see the frame / marks because the axle clamps will be over the marks

when it's remounted you will see...

Have a look at EVERY bike with track nuts and you will see the same.
If you file the nuts smooth, they won't grip the ends and the wheel will move.

tynan paste would certainly stop smooth nuts from slipping when pressed against the flange face
Hello Everybody,
I want to build up a pista bike, one question which I'm thinking a lot is the axle clamping.
How do you do it? These Axle Clamping nuts have groovings which leave marks in the frame when tightening, which I dislike very much. How can this be avoided (file it down?), and is it save to make so?
