I've 500GB in mine, and nearly filled it up.
Kept a 1TB external for back up rather than secondary storage.
It's still be cheaper than getting a new laptop when the old one still work fairly well.

Backup wise, I think a paid dropbox account is the best thing ever, especially now they have bumped it up to 1TB. 7 quid ish a month for offsite back up (and all the other uses) is so damn good - I lost 5 years work when my flat was broken into and all my drives (and laptops) taken. Never again!

1TB wont be cheap!
Get as big as you can afford and a decent external for most files... my internal is a 256GB (rMBP) and I keep a 1TB external with all my dropbox etc on.
