I've driven these cars extensively, both petrol and diesel as well as auto's and manuals. I like the fact that they're RWD and the steering is both snappy and responsive, but can't get over the fact that if you carry any more than two people then rear passengers need to be PORG's.
I solved the issue by buying a Golf. Bigger load access and rear legroom and even though it's FWD, VW appear to have defied physics with the diff in the new GTI.
Rented a BMW 120d coupe (M Sport) recently, I know they're marmite but I absolutely love the look of them and it was a great drive, never driven RWD before and the steering was snappy but assured at speed. Don't really dig on diesels but it always had power to spare.
